NOTES ON THE STRAIT OF MESSINA

Strong tidal streams and currents exist in the Strait, particularly at the N end where i/elocities of up to 4¼ knots may be experienced. Density differences between N and S in addition to tidal factors are responsible.

A strong N wind can affect the duration of the streams considerably and raise a heavy sea off Punta San Raineri. Strong whirlpools are formed inshore at many points. At the urn of tide turbulent bores called "Tagli" are formed across the Strait.

Small craft should navigate the area with caution, particularly in periods of strong winds.

N going stream begins under the power cables at HW Gibraltar - 2h. 1 5min.

S going stream begins +4h. OOmin.
