The south coast of France is the yachting Mecca of the Mediterranean. In the summer there are large numbers of yachts cruising the coast with many based permanently here and to accommodate them numerous marinas have been built so that it is not an exaggeration to say that one cruises from marina to marina. The facilities and services are the best offered anywhere in the Mediterranean but it is difficult to get away from it all to a quiet bay around the corner. The coast is divided into regions:

Languedoc-Roussillon  - The low marshy coast west of the Rhone delta that extends almost to the Spanish border. (There is ten miles of rugged coast before the Spanish border called the Cote Vermeille, the vermillion coast, after the characteristic reddish rock bordering it.) Numerous new gargantuan marina developments have been built at intervals along the coast.

Côte Bleue  - The blue coast that stretches from the Rhone to Cap Sicie. There are numerous marinas, the calanques of Cassis, and some commercial and fishing harbours. Marseille is the principal commercial harbour and Toulon a large naval base.

Côte d'Azur  - The Azure coast that stretches from Cap Sicie to Cap Ferrat; there are many marinas including of course St Tropez and Cannes. In the summer the more fashionable marinas are full to overflowing and it is difficult to find a berth.

The French Riviera Extends from Nice to the Italian border and Riviera. There are numerous marinas and the principality of Monaco along this stretch of coast.

Corsica There are fewer marinas but numerous picturesque anchorages. The island is popular in the summer but nothing like as crowded as the mainland coast.
